The Vargyas Gorge natural area is the most spectacular karst region of Szeklerland. It is situated in the northern part of the Perșani Mountains (Eastern Carpathians in Romania), close to the village Homoródalmás (Mereşti) on the border of two counties (Harghita and Covasna). The gorge is 4 km long, being cut by Vargyas stream. Beneath the cliffs lies a 7,5 km cave system with 124 caves. The largest of these caves is named after Orbán Balázs, which is the first scientifically researched cave in Transylvania. The flora and the fauna of the karst region is extremly rich and diversified. We can find many rare and endangered plantspecies. The natural area belongs to the „ Nature-, Tourism and Speological Association Lost World”.
