Harghita Turf Bog is a botanical reservation which is very close to Festő mineral water fountain. This wetland is a typical peat bog with a 120 m length and 50 m width being fed by several mineral water fountains containing iron. Its formation is thanks to the fact that volcanic rocks have waterlightal qualities: due to the accumulated water (rain, fountains) in the holes, in the craters the soil doesn’t receive enough oxygen. Because of the lack of the oxygen the processes of degradation become slow, the organic matters aggregate, the surface becomes sour and the bacterial flora transforms. This is how peak bogs come into existence and this is the reason why you can find here plants that are present only in similar wetlands in Northern Europe: they are called relicts.
